Assistant Scientific Director – Universities Federation for Animal Welfare and the Humane Slaughter Association
The Universities Federation for Animal Welfare and the Humane Slaughter Association have an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated animal welfare scientist to become their new Assistant Scientific Director. This is a unique opportunity to gain expertise in the NGO sector whilst maintaining strong links with the academic community. The Assistant Scientific Director will:
- Alongside the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) direct the scientific activities of both charities.
- Manage both charities’ externally funded research programmes.
- Play a leading role in the charities’ internal research programmes.
- Assist the CEO and Senior Management Team in managing and setting the strategic direction of both charities as a member of their Senior Management Team.
- Assist the CEO and the editorial staff in editing UFAW’s scientific journal Animal Welfare by reviewing submissions and making editorial decisions as well as liaising with section editors, authors and peer-reviewers.
- Promote the scientific activities of the two charities and to act as a spokesperson where appropriate.
- Facilitate collaboration and communication between the two charities.
Salary will be on the on the UCEA pay scale (£41,526 to £57,418), plus £2177 London weighting, plus 8% employers pension contribution, depending on qualifications and experience.
Candidates should have extensive knowledge and experience of animal welfare science, as well as experience of scientific research at the postdoctoral level. A veterinary qualification and/or extensive experience of the welfare of farmed animals would be an advantage. Candidates must have the legal right to reside and work in the UK.
